Moving Type
OK, 1 week into the holidays, time to gather your thoughts again and kick on with some creative work again. Apart from 1 or 2 your blogs are empty. I should be seeing your research up there at least. Moving type is not as confusing as some of you are thinking, I am not expecting a perfectly constructed kinetic type motion miracle here, just an experimental look at how you would like to move type about!
Always refer to the brief if you are stuck: Design a typographical screen sequence for a movie intro, documentary, advert or quotation. Use stop animation, after effects or flash to create moving type. Be poetic & subtle, bold & brash or just venture off into your own mad world. Have fun and be creative.
You should be working towards Deliverable 1&2 until I see you next:
Deliverable 1 – Design Blog
- Key information that you feel is relevant to your development. Include samples which you admire and show some of your own design development. Uploaded information is admissible only with evaluations, discussions and/or comments to your content.
Deliverable 2 – Design Development
A3 layout pad containing research and idea generation (5 pages), design development (5 pages) and storyboards (5 pages).
Get cracking and I will see you all after the break.
Here’s the brief if you don’t already have it.

Design meets Drama meets Music meets Dance
London moves on.
The dust has settled on Westminster Bridge and the Plaza Hotel still stands in the wake of an epic outing.
Congrats to Mr. Hodge on a hassle free trip, where the students indulged and indulged some more in what London culture has to offer. Some of the highlights included: ‘Decode’ at the V&A, ‘Zena Edwards & Polar Bear’ at the Southbank Centre, ‘The White Guard’ at the National Theatre followed the next morning with an access all areas backstage tour of the National Theatre, The ‘Design Museum’ and the ‘Tate Modern’ to name but a few.
There was plenty of time for all to find there own piece of London too, with reports of foo fighting dodgy speakers, phantoms in the daytime, 360 strange boys, picnics in corridors and the dreaded service charge. It was all good fun!

Wearing Type
Your brand spanking new type project
It is said that type is the basic currency of design. Without proper command over your typography, your design will suffer. Following the previous project, which was so dense and richly fortified with indispensable lessons on how to properly craft type on a page … lets chuck all that out the window … and wear some type.
Download the ‘Wearing Type Brief’ I think you’re gonna like it.

Typmohawk
For his talk at the London College of Communication, typographic artist Oded Ezer wore this self-made Typo-Mohawk (Typmohawk?). It reads “Typosexual” though I have no idea what it is all about … Thanks Oded!
This wednesday you are due to hand in your ‘Editorial Project’. You will also be introduced to your new two week brief. See you all then.

Magazine Cover Design
Matt Willey recently recorded his decision-making on a feature design for the Royal Academy magazine. Anyone who has designed a magazine will recognise the process – a very useful insight into how editorial design works.
A short about cover design, not directly typography but it will help you with some photoshop techniques.
WIRED Magazine clip: Along with appropriate typography, the cover image is all important and often will influence your choice of font for the feature stories.
Your cover photography should be first hand.

Bdes Year 1 typography/print workshop
Ulster American Folk Park 2010

1st year Design Communication students enjoyed a (cold) day out at the Ulster American Folk park on Wednesday. ‘Blairs Printers’ in the Old World was the venue for the typography/traditional print workshop. The students had a chance to get their hands dirty and experience traditional printing techniques. The phrases “Cut to the chase”, “Rule of Thumb”, and “Mind your P’s & Q’s” all make sense now. The snow fell early and covered the park in a white coat which added an eerie atmosphere to the guided tour through Ireland’s emigration past. The students called to see the blacksmith, went back to school, warmed up at every available open fire, boarded the ship and clashed with the American Indian.
A worthwhile educational trip and a welcome break from the norm. The students engaged well with the guides. Some had paranormal experiences, a few were just there for the whiskey marmalade and others got a bit carried away with the livestock, but all in all I think everyone a had good day out.
Thanks to everyone that attended, the cameras were snapping away all day. Insert all pics in your visual diary and choose a few of the best for your blogs. We are into the last 2 weeks on the editorial project, make sure you are up to speed (see posts below for further information) for next week. See you all then!
